Trainer Tip of the Month
Dr. Mark Cheng came to Pacific Strength last month to teach a workshop. We started out with the Functional Movement Screen and talked about imbalances in the body. You can read more on my blog but I wanted to highlight a couple major points that were made. We discussed stiff and immobile joints and the fact that many times, we grind through a movement and force our bodies into positions they really don’t want to be in. When we do this, it’s like driving with the parking brake on. When we don’t know that the parking brake is on, the instinct is to push the gas pedal harder. That’s what we are doing with our bodies- we’re grinding our gears (our joints) instead of figuring out what is holding us back. What we need to do is find our parking break and release it. Every body is different and we have many ways to determine where the parking brake is in your body.
- Where is your body holding you back? -
Schedule a time to get tested. Have a certified instructor administer the Functional Movement Screen to determine where you can make improvements in your movement.
- Foam Roller -
The foam roller releases stiff, tight muscles and allows your body to move better. Use this as part of your warmup where ever you generally feel tight.
- Horse Stance -
Many people have tight hips! Release your hip flexors and feel yourself swing without your hip flexor parking brake on. You’ll feel so fluid, you may not hate swings as much after that! Ask about it in class and we’ll work it into a workout!
Pacific Strength Superstar
Congratulations to Allie Larwood, our Pacific Strength Superstar of the Summer. Allie came to Pacific Strength after being “harassed” by her neighbors for months. With a couple bad knees and a knee replacement in her future, she was nervous about trying. She started with 2 classes per week and now is up to 3, claiming she’s “addicted”. She’s lost weight and inches and is feeling stronger and fitter than she has in years.
In Allie’s words “Who knew that is form of exercise, that I had previously thought looked so ridiculous and would surely cause injury would turn out to be the exercise that would give me all the strength and toning I was craving! I hadn’t exercised on a regular basis for over 2 years and I was eating poorly. Weight gain and being physically weak was the result. Taking classes for the last 6 months has produced real results! I am feeling muscles I hadn’t felt in so long and it has made me more mindful of a healthy diet.” About the classes, Allie says, “It is hard work, but for just 45-minutes a class, well, I can do that! It leaves me enough time to parent Addie and not feel guilty. I see it as an investment in my health. I am also very inspired by my classmates who work hard on form and who have also become addicted to being strong and more toned as a result of swinging the bell.”
